Uganda’s growing ability to conduct clinical trials which strengthens her to attract global pharmaceutical companies looking to invest in medicine has acquired global recognition.
Access to Medicine Foundation, an
independent nonprofit organisation
based in the Netherlands, recognised
Uganda as one of the suitable
investment destinations for global
medicine companies in Africa.
The foundation’s mission is to stimulate and guide pharmaceutical companies to do more for the people living in low and middle income countries without access to medicine.
Addressing African reporters on the
2024 Access to Medicine Index, the
foundation Chief Executive Officer Jayasree Lyer, said in Africa, it’s only Uganda and three other countries which have capability to conduct trials.
The other countries are South Africa, Ethiopia and Nigeria.
Lyer said this gives Uganda and
three other nations an edge on continent when it comes to development of medicine.
According to the World Health
Organisation, clinical trials are a type of
research that studies new tests and treatments and evaluates their efforts on human health outcomes, and people are expected to volunteer to take part in trials to test medicine intervations.
